I am a friend of Damien's, and I am saddened by his loss, but encouraged by reading that his granddad was a help and friend to many.

I do not remember exactly when I met George, it seems as if I have known him all of my life. I met him at the First Baptist Church and was privileged to serve with him as a deacon. I was five years old when the United States entered into World War II, and I have always felt that those who served in that conflict deserve our everlasting thanks and appreciation for their service. My Mothers brother served in the army during that period, and I can recall as a child how proud I was of my uncle Ross. He, like most men who served in the war does not talk about it much. This is the way my friend George was too. My relationship with George was perhaps a bit unusual due to the difference in our ages. However, we got along so well that I shall never forget that I called him "Slick" and he called me either "Slim" or "Big Boy". One night after church, I told him about watching a television program where survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack were interviewed and were crying as they recounted their experience. As I finished talking, I noticed that George had tears in his eyes. I said to him, "I am sorry George, I did not mean to make this happen." He then said, "Aw this sort of thing happens every once in awhile." I hugged him strongly and told him at that time that I loved him. It is true, I loved George Methvin, and always will. He was and is my friend, was and is my hero, I shall miss him more than I am able to express. The main consolation that I have is that I know that as a Christian, George is with his Lord and Savior at this time, and someday, I will see my friend again. My condolences to Mrs. Methvin and the rest of the family. I know that there is nothing that I can say to ease your sorrow, you have lost a husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, etc. and I have lost my friend.

Dearest Methvin Family, We wish to express our deepest sorrow at the earthly loss of your precious father. We know that he gained the treasure of his heavenly home the moment he left this earth. We treasure many memories that will forever be etched in our hearts of times and experiences shared. We especially remember the time that Beau was not planning to go to college and on a particular workday at Trinity Baptist MR. Methvin decided to take matters into his own hands. He asked Beau how many more years of school he had. Beau answered, 2 more. Mr. Methvin said, no you don't. You forgot to add in four for college. Beau always loved working with him on workdays and builders trips. He has recently shared happenings from the Woodard Barn with us involving "cornmeal". Joe and I remember the times we spent in your Port Arthur home attending study courses and Youth events. Your "Deacon" husband and dad holds a very special place in our hearts. Our prayers are with you all. We know God will walk closely beside you during these special days of loss. We hope to see you Tuesday evening. Love Carolyn and Joe
