Homer Tolar, 97, of Austin, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004, of natural causes. Tolar was born August 4, 1907 in Quitman, Louisiana. He played football and completed high school in Mt. Pleasant and moved to West Texas to work at PlasterCo Mill in Hamlin. During World War II, Tolar was a foreman at Livingston Shipbuilding in Orange, receiving a citation for never missing a day on the job. He owned and operated Tolar Electric and Neon Sign Company before supervising construction projects in Honolulu and Hilo, Hawaii, and Korea. Tolar was an avid golfer, hitting a hole in one at the age of 66.
Tolar married Doris Sayer, of Hamlin, who bore him nine children of whom eight survive. Children are James Homer Tolar of Houston; Roddy Carroll Tolar of Orange; Robin Sayer Tolar, deceased; Gary Joe Tolar of Kingsville; Jan Tolar Modisette of Bullard; Kitti Tolar of Austin; Gay Tolar of Hilo, Hawaii; Bonni Tolar Parker and Richard Tolar of Austin. Tolar is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren in addition to great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2004, at R S Farmer Memorial Cemetery in Silsbee.
