JAMES PERSHING CARAWAY, SR.
J. Pershing Caraway was born on March 7, 1918 and died February 9, 2006. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Culver Caraway, parents J.C. and Lottie Gregory Caraway, brothers Oliver,Virgil, Lester and Bill Caraway and sister Ruth Thomas Caraway.
Pershing was proud of his family’s Masonic and Eastern Star heritage, and obtained the ranking of Master Mason. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, where he was stationed in the Philippine Islands and Korea. An avid fisherman, he spent many years at his lake house on Sam Rayburn near Zavalla, and was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church. Slim was a tall man in stature, with the temperament of a gentle giant. He was known and loved by many…. as he would say, “damn right!”
He is survived by two sons, Burl Caraway and his wife Peggy of Orange, TX and James P. “Jim” Caraway, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Crystal Beach, TX; four grandchildren, Robyn McCarthy of Bastrop, TX, Stephanie Cumpton of Bryan, TX, Kelly Caraway of Beaumont, TX and Bryan Caraway of Bridge City, TX and sixteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by many loving nephews, nieces and cousins in the Caraway and Culver families.
Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Riley, Billy Riley, Kenny Weyler, Randy Weyler, J. C. Caraway and John Gore.
The Caraway family would like to extend their heart-felt thanks to the people who contributed to the care of Mr. Caraway, including the staff of Pinehurst Health and Rehabilitation and Orange Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Pastor Kevin Trinkle.
Services are 11:00 am Saturday, February 11, 2006 at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee, TX with Lamar Thomas and Rodney Weyler officiating. Following the service, a Masonic graveside service will be conducted by Silsbee Masonic Lodge 927 at Franks Branch Cemetery in Fred, TX…….LET’S GO FISHIN’!!!!!!
