James Vinson Overstreet joined his beloved Opal (Bo) in Heaven on February 15, 2006.
Vinson was born in Fuqua, Liberty County, Texas on January 10, 1912, to James Hampton (Bud) and Martha Williford Overstreet. Vinson spent most of his life in Hardin County, Texas, where he was a well known and respected businessman. He was a community leader, very active in civil affairs, and a long time member of the Masonic Lodge. Above all else, Vinson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family.
Vinson married Opal Hendrix in 1930. The following year, their son, Dwayne Vinson was born. Vinson and Opal owned and operated a small grocery and feed store in Honey Island in the late 30’s. They later moved to Kountze where in 1945, Vinson started Overstreet Butane Service and ran it along with a retail appliance store until his retirement in the late 80’s. Vinson was one of the founders of Peoples State Bank and served on the board of director for many years. He also helped form Texas Butane Dealers Association and served as District President. Vinson was active in the Lions Club for many years. He helped set up the Holland Cemetery Association, as well as being involved in numerous other worthy causes.
Vinson was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Hendrix Overstreet; parents James Hampton (Bud) and Martha Williford Overstreet; and brother, Henry Olen Overstreet. He is survived by his sister, Gladys Overstreet Eller of Beaumont; son Dwayne Vinson Overstreet and wife Shirley, of Honey Island; grandsons, James Vinson II and wife, Joline, of Kountze; Byron and wife, Debbie, Royce and wife, Jason, all of Honey Island and granddaughter Rhonda and husband Reverend Randy Chatelain of Kountze; eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 17, 2006, at Farmer’s Funeral Home, Silsbee, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 18, 2006, 2:00 pm, at First Baptist Church, Kountze, with burial at Old Hardin Cemetery.
