
Velma Marie Barnes, 82, of Silsbee, died May 30, 2008 at Silsbee Oaks Health Care after a brave fight with liver cancer.
She was born May 2, 1926, in Omaha, NE, raised in Fairbury, NE, and lived in Silsbee for 57 years where she raised her family. Velma began her professional career by teaching in a one-room school house in rural Nebraska. She retired from the Silsbee Independent School District where she had worked for 20 years as a paraprofessional.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday at First Baptist Church in Silsbee, with burial at Knupple Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. Sunday at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee.
She was a Christian and a long time member of First Baptist Church of Silsbee. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Survivors include her daughter Shirley Drennen and husband Donald of Silsbee, son Charles Barnes, III and wife Geralann of Toledo Village, TX. and her son Jerry Barnes and wife, Linda of Silsbee. Mrs. Barnes had 7 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Dale Walker of Ruidoso, NM and sisters Muriel Johnson of Fairbury, NE and Carol Blaha of Wilber, NE.
She was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate of 55 years, Charles (Ed) Barnes, Jr., her sisters Lois Campbell and Bonnie Walker.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Silsbee.
