Athan was a regular at the Nederland Recreation Center while growning up. He was never long without a smile or smirk, having such a wonderful sense of humor. He was also a proud sailor in service to his country. I vividly remember the day he stooped by to tell us he was soon to ship out. This is truly a sad day for anyone who ever spent time with Athan. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the family and frieds closest to him. Athan will be missed. T. Riley

I'm currently deployed and was saddened to hear this from so far away. Athan was definately one of the coolest guys I've met since I joined the Navy. Simply put, he was the man. He was one of a very few people who looked out for me when I was still getting settled in Lemoore, and I never really had a chance to thank him sincerely for that. I can't say that I've known him for ages like some of my counterparts, but I feel I was able to get to know him pretty well as a person... he was a great friend to me, and just as great as my superior. I can't help but feel that home will be emptier without him there to crack jokes, tease us, and keep us light hearted and motivated while demanding his AMP energy drink every morning. He will be missed by all of us for as long time to come. I wish his wife and the rest of his family the best, and my sincere condolences.
