Willie Mae Lambert Muckleroy Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1907 - 2009

Willie Mae Lambert MuckleroyWillie Mae Lambert Muckleroy, 101, was born November 30, 1907, in Swift, Texas, to Evalina Pleasant and John Franklin Lambert, and passed away on Friday, February 20, 2009, at her home in Silsbee, Texas.

A beauty, known as the Belle of Swift, she eloped on her 16th birthday and spent 80 years with her husband, Albert 'Sye' Muckleroy, who passed away December 22, 2003, at the age of 98.

Willie and her husband moved from Nacogdoches to Baytown, Texas, in the 1920's where he worked at Exxon (Humble Oil & Refining Co.) and where they reared their four children, Hurshel, Herbert, Robbie, and Fairy Nell (Kelly) Muckleroy.

Willie provided a wonderful home for her children in Cedar Bayou and Baytown, Texas, and was supportive in school activities, especially as 'Room Mother' for her daughter's elementary school days. She sewed, cooked three hot meals a day, milked a cow, tended her vegetable and flower gardens, sold milk and butter, helped feed the livestock, and did a multitude of chores with an unbelievable energy. She was sweet, and her warm kitchen and dining room were the heart of her home where friends and family gathered for entertaining stories and good home cooking. She always insisted that visitors eat whether it was a meal or coffee and dessert. People other than the family often sat at the dinner table because of her hospitality and friendship. Animals adored her and flowers flourished.

In later years, she and her husband cleared wooded land on Turtle Bayou near Anahuac, Texas, on IH-10, and created a fishing resort and RV Park. They retired only after Albert was 80 years old and she was 78, and moved to Fred, Texas, for a few years. Later, they moved to Silsbee, Texas, to be near family members.

Willie is preceded in death by her husband, Albert; son, Hurshel Albert Muckleroy; parents, 'Evie' and Frank Lambert; siblings, Bernice Owens, L. D. Lambert, Gloria Jean Anthony, Pauline Lambert, and baby Clyde.

She is survived by her children, Herbert Charles Muckleroy and wife Mary K. of Silsbee; Robbie Morris Muckleroy and wife Joyce of Harper; and Fairy Nell (Kelly) Muckleroy Hamilton of Silsbee; her grandchildren, Donna Marie Myers of Waco; Michael Kent Muckleroy of San Antonio; Mark Muckleroy and Don Charles Muckleroy of Silsbee; great-grandchildren, Robin Hartberg, Sam Alexander, David Alexander, Danielle Muckleroy, Lauren Muckleroy, Matthew Muckleroy, and David Muckleroy; great-great grandchildren, twins Hunter and Caroline Hartberg.

The family is grateful for Willie's special and gifted friends, Dorothy Jolly and Lillian Townsend, and we thank caregivers Sabra Day, LVN, and Texas Home Health.

A gathering of family and friends will be at Farmers Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2009. Graveside Service will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in Silsbee at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 23, 2009.

Willie Mae Muckleroy was my grandmother. Her oldest son was Hurshel Albert Muckleroy who preceded her in an untimely death in 2002. I am so blessed to have had this wonderful woman in my life for my entire 60 years. Not many people are that lucky. I must correct two omissions in her obituary though. My mother, Dora Foster Muckleroy, was a member of the Muckleroy family for 58 years before her death in 2006. I know in times of grief many things are overlooked. Also my granddaughter, Willow Marie Alexander-daughter of my son Sam and his wife Flip, was also omitted from the obit. My three children, Robin, Sam and David had the great opportunity to know their great-grandparents, Willie Mae and Sye Muckleroy, and will pass down through oral history the stories we all listened to over many years to their own children. My husband, Jim, only had 10 years to know Grandma, but he calls her the "Original Steel Magnolia". She truly was that. Grandma, I will miss our phone calls and visits to your home which always engulfed us in a blanket of warmth. Forever, Donna

I only knew Mrs. Muckleroy for a few years but her children have been a part of my life for many more. Her son Herbert was known as coach during his tenure at Kountze School District. Her daughter Kelly was my drama teacher when I attended school at Silsbee. Mrs. Muckleroy was a sharp dresser with a mind equal to the task and until her fall several years ago - was mobile and kept a neat house and a kitchen warm and friendly with a coffee pot which never saw a vacation. Despite being bed ridden she was interested in life and in those who came to visit her. My deepest prayers for her friends and family - with a special nod to stellar caregiver and daughter Kelly whose uncompromising devotation should be emulated by all.

I met Mrs. Muckleroy several years ago after Kelly moved back to Silsbee. Mrs. Muckleroy was always well groomed and had pride in her appearance - at the ripe age of 98. Her home was warm and inviting and she often had a pot of hot coffee for guests. Later -after a fall - she was confined to her bed but even then she was as sharp as a tack and continued to hold the love and respect of her friends and family. When someone lives as long as she it is not until they have passed the extent of their influence realized. She is like a mighty oak - whose life touched many - either directly or through her children. Her daughter Kelly was my drama teacher in Silsbee. Her son was known as coach while at Kountze schools. Her grandson is involved in Southeast Texas schools, a granddaughter is training to become a doctor. These are but a few of her achievements. The day the Oscars were presented in Los Angeles, Mrs. Muckleroy's visitation occurred. The Oscars made the headlines today but Mrs. Muckleroy's achievements will long be felt and appreciated - well after the award shows. To her family - especially her excellent caregiver and daughter - Kelly - prayers your way. She lived more than a century and she will be greatly missed!

I only had the chance to visit with MaMaw a hand full of times. However, those experiences made a lasting impact with me, which I cherish. She will be remembered with a warm heart and we will pass those memories on to Willow. My heart goes out to the entire family. -Flip

Willie Mae was my great-grandmother, and she will be truly missed. I'll always remember her and grandpa's stories of their lives through the good and bad times. Also the Obituary left off my daughter, Willow Marie Alexander, who is also one of Willie Mae's great-great-grandchildren. Willow, who is now 18 months old, only had a chance to meet her great-grandmother once, but I will never forget the look in my grandmother's eye's as my daughter and her cuddled together in bed. Every time I spoke with grandma she would ask "how's the little fella". I wish Willow could have heard some of the stories we heard growing up, but as she gets older she will learn about her great-great-grandparents and what a wonderful and adventurous life they lead. Thank you, Sam Alexander - Lorena, Tx samalex@gmail.com
