Harold and I were first cousins. One time when my parents and I were visiting his family, my Mother invited him to come home with us. Aunt Mattie said OK. This was a time when everyone was on rationing. Mother said "I will need his rationing book." Aunt Mattie said, "OK." So began our wonderful time together. Since I am an only child, it was a joy to have someone to play with. At that time Harold spoke only French. I knew only English. That presented some difficulty. But Harold was very bright. One day, Harold saw Daddy's pocket knife. He told Mother he wanted a pocket knife. Mother said, "When you learn to speak English, I'll get a pocket knife for you." It was amazing how quickly he learned to speak English! I don't recall a great deal more about his stay or the length of time he was with us, except that I have a pleasant and fond memory of that time. Reflecting today about him, he was a sweet little boy and we enjoyed his stay with our family. Later in life, we were delighted when he came to visit us after being in the Navy.

Harold is my first cousin and when I was an adolescent and teenager he was a role model for me for his kind and quiet demeanor, his good looks and his military service. I regret that it has been many years since I had seen him but I will always remember and admire him. my condolences to those close to him.
