I just found out about Mr. Scott's passing. I usually read the Silsbee Bee word for word when I get it, but this week I just glanced at it. My wife was reading the Silsbee Bee this morning and read about Mr. Scott and informed me.
Upon hearing this I immediately read the obituary and realized if I had read the paper on last Thursday when I get it, I would have been able to go to the funeral. I feel terrible that I was not there to show my respect for a man that I was truly honored to know.
I met Mr. Scott and his family soon after being hired by Evadale ISD in August 1993. During the four years I spent at Evadale I spent more time with Mr. Scott than anyone else beside my family. He would come to the school every day and help the coaching staff. He would mainly help mow and paint the Football and Baseball Fields. He would do whatever we asked. He would also help clean everything up after all home games. He helped me with all my baseball camps that I had at Evadale each summer.
My favorite memories of Mr. Scott start with his pet squirrel (Do-Dat) I believe was its name. He would bring that squirrel with him. He had a shoe string tied to the squirrel and the squirrel would always be all over Mr. Scotts neck. It was quite a site.
Mr. Scott loved drinking coffee and every morning he would come in the field house and at some point in time each day I would hide his coffee cup from him. Which lead to some very interesting and entertaining times. We had lots of fun together.
He helped me build an entire Double bullpen pitching mound on the Evadale Baseball field in the winter of 1994 on a Saturday that to this day was the most strenuous day I have ever worked and I am positive it was the same for Mr. Scott.
He gave Evadale ISD so much of his time and effort. I know that he continued this after I left and went to Spurger ISD. We as a coaching staff always appreciated everything he did, but it was one of those situations that you just wished there was more you could have done for him. Evadale ISD should be indebted to him for all the years of service he provided.
I have nothing but great memories of Mr. Scott and I know over the last 14 years I have only seen him a handful of times, but the memories I have are so vivid it seems like just yesterday that we were working on some type of project.
To his family I say this "I was honored to know Mr. Scott, and I know that I am indebted to him for all the times he helped me. He was without a doubt one of the most giving men I have ever known and I will miss him tremendously. There have not been many days in my life over the last 14 years that something throughout the day has not made me think of Mr. Scott. And I know that his memory will stay with me the rest of my life, because that is the kind of impact he had on me."

My sympathy goes to all of Gene's family. Thank you Delores for letting me know. I remembered Gene being in my grade but when I checked the Satsuma he was one grade ahead. Not that much difference now. May GOD be your refuge in the days ahead.
