1929 - 2009
John Henry Philyaw at the age of 80 passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at his home in Kerrville. He was born on February 26, 1929 in Tyronza, Arkansas to Frank and Martha "Whidden" Philyaw. John married Christine DiStefano in Lufkin on March 21, 1959. He worked for Mooney in the 1960's and retired from Pigeon Thomas of Memphis, Tennessee in 1988. John was loved by all who met him and he never knew a stranger. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, dominoes, football, and cards. John was one of the best story tellers of all times. His smile could light up a room and he had a wonderful since of humor. John will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Our Father loved life and loved his family. He looked forward to annual family reunions. John quoted that ("Tell my brothers I was the last one to get a deer"). We will miss you but I know you are in good hands. Go rest high on that mountain. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Martha Philyaw, son John H. Philyaw Jr, brothers JD Philyaw and Lindy Philyaw.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years Christine "DiStefano" Philyaw of Kerrville; 3 sons Joseph Philyaw and wife Ann of Blytheville, Arkansas, Michael Philyaw of Elmore City, Oklahoma and David Philyaw of Oklahoma; 2 daughters Mary Frances Root and husband Randy of Kerrville and Christina Lozano and husband Richard of Kerrville; 6 grandchildren Dustin Philyaw, Tristan Philyaw, Brianna Bergman, Ashley Root, Brady Root and Jon Lozano; 2 great grandchildren Mallory Root and Natalie Flora; 3 brothers Frank Philyaw and wife Dean of Earle, Arkansas, Robert Philyaw and wife Ann of Earle, Arkansas, James Philyaw and wife Mona of Boise, Idaho; 3 sisters Marty Trimble of London, Texas, Grace Raiford and husband Gene of Hunt, Texas and Susie Mathinson of Malakoff, Texas; many nieces, nephews and many other family members and friends who love him will miss him.

Dear Philyaw Family,
I wish I could be there with you today, as I loved Uncle Henry and I greatly regret that I was able to enjoy only a few occasions in his company. My happiest memory of him is from about eight years ago at Aunt Grace's house when he danced to music we were making on her back porch. He had a wonderful, silly smile on his face and he danced hard and fast. My father (Jim Philyaw) is sorely missing Uncle Henry, and we all send our love and prayers and hope you are getting through this hard time. Love to you all. --Melanie
