1927 - 2024
Justine Felix Rutherford, 96, of Lesage, WV, went home to be with the Lord on March 15, 2024. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Gordon Rutherford. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery. She was born April 2, 1927 in Glenwood, WV, the daughter of the late Walter Felix and Julia Spurlock Felix. She was preceded in death by her husband Doyle Rutherford, her siblings, Julia Felix Meadows, Alvin Felix, Everett Spurlock, Elba Felix, Warren Felix, and Arnold Felix. She is survived by her two sons, Kenneth (Jeannine) Rutherford of Ona, WV and Gordon (Connie) Rutherford of Lesage, WV, seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Justine retired as a nurse from St. Mary’s Hospital. Beyond a career, her passion was bringing comfort to those who were sick and hurting. She was a member of Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Justine was a talented lady. She enjoyed art and painting. Her paintings line the walls of family and friends. After retirement, she and her husband decided they would start making jewelry. For several years they attended art and craft fairs selling their wares and making new friends. She authored three books, one of which earned her West Virginia Author of the Year. She was blessed in her later years to be able to travel extensively throughout the USA and several countries with her very dear friend Curtis Hagerty. Yet her greatest creation was her family which she was so proud of and loved dearly. The family feels very blessed to have had such a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington for providing excellent care during her final days with her family. The family would like to especially thank Jennifer Gray for her kindness, love, and care of Justine. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.

I have two of her books, rough lumber and wild mustard. I picked them up somewhere this year in a book giveaway. My roots are in Illinois farm country near Chicago, so many of her experiences were unlike mine. But the books reminded me of my mother telling stories in such a matter of fact manner, whether catching crawdads down by the creek or the early demise of a relative. I appreciate her books, and hope herflair for writing has passed on to others in the family.

Found out about Justine's passing belatedly. A great lady and faithful friend to many. My privilege having her in The Life Writing Class and helping get her launched on her writing career. Justine was pure inspiration and a gifted, natural-born writer.
