1916 - 2005

Alice Edwina Buell, 89, went to her new home in Heaven on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. She died after a brief illness at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

She was born June 16, 1916, in Dennis, Kan. Edwina was the second-born child of the late James Edgar and Flossie Miller Carson.

She was predeceased by her brother, James Jarile Carson, and a sister, Esther Mae Loffer.

She is survived by a sister, Darlene Mildred MacArthur of Denver, Colo., and her sister-in-law, Ella White of Independence, Kan.

Edwina was a war bride whose first husband, James William Houser, sacrificed his life in service to our country during World War II. She was predeceased by her second husband of 48 years, Dr. Stephen David Buell.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Nancy Lynn (Nolan) Graham, and Charles Stephen (Vicki) Buell. Additionally, she is survived by six grandchildren, who were the special lights of her life: Christopher Scott (Megan) Buell, Craig Stephen Buell, Bethany Enloe Buell, Paul Nathan (Shinko) Graham, Nadia Christin (Brad) Kachelreis and Stephanie Nichelle Sullivan, as well as three adored great-grandchildren, Warner Reilly Buell, Wesley Carson Buell and Katelyn Sophia Kachelreis. The family wishes to express special appreciation to Edwina's loving caregiver, Rachel Phillips.

Edwina was a graduate of Marshall College, where she earned a B.A. and an M.A. in elementary education. She loved the many hundreds of children she taught in her years as a Cabell County educator at Martha, Peyton and Highlawn Elementary Schools. Her church home was Fellowship Baptist Church.

She lived in her later years in Gallipolis with her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Nolan. She had an amazing ability to share her love with whomever she came in contact. Edwina's legacy was her family, to whom she taught many life lessons through her gifts of love.

McCoy-Moore Funeral Home of Gallipolis is in charge of the arrangements and interment will be in Coffeyville, Kan., at Fairview Cemetery, on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006. Her memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, with visitation from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy can be mailed to the family at 4 Sutherland Road, Huntington, W.Va. 25705. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Edwina's name be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church, 600 McCormick Road, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631, or the First United Methodist Church, 1124 Fifth Ave., Huntington, W.Va. 25701.
